Troubleshooting: Access Denied

Symptoms

The backup log indicates an “Access Denied” error or “Error 0x80070005” for specific files or folders.

Cause

This occurs when the Data Deposit Box service or the user account running the backup does not have the necessary NTFS permissions to read the source file. This is common in “System” folders or folders owned by a different user profile.

Resolution

  1. Check Permissions: Right-click the folder in question, select Properties > Security. Ensure the account running the backup (or “SYSTEM”) has Read access.
  2. Run as Administrator: Ensure the Data Deposit Box agent is running with administrative privileges.
  3. Inheritance: Ensure permissions are being inherited correctly from the parent folder.
